"Zero/Nothing", That's what the NYPD's Demographics Unit says it has to show for years of surveillance of New York's Islamic community and other such communities in the region.
Unit commander Thomas Galati said this week that he's "never made a lead from rhetoric that came from a Demographics report and I'm here since 2006." Muslims at Friday prayers weren't surprised.
Just last year the Associated Press last exposed the NYPD surveillance program -- one that's partially federally funded and reached far outside the New York Department's jurisdiction.
NYPD leadership says that the purpose of the unit was to identify places from whence a threat might come -- but again -- no investigations or indictments resulted.
Now we spoke with leaders in the Arab-American community here in Brooklyn -- and they say that though no evidence was found whatsoever of any wrongdoing -- it doesn't alleviate the insult.
While Islamic Americans are left smarting at the idea of their own tax money being used by their own government to spy on them -- other New Yorkers see a police department that employs a wide range of racial-profiling tactics -- including "Stop and Frisk" techniques in black and Latino communities that Sarsour mentioned.
Legal officials in New Jersey have determined that NYPD investigators violated no laws when they went beyond their jurisdiction to surveil Muslims there.
Civil rights officials -- however -- say that the program violates the most basic American values of religious freedom and equal protection.
Sarsour cautions that just because cops admit they've found nothing -- it doesn't mean the program is finished.
